Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows - D.R.U.G.S. (2011)

Every so often, the impending release of an album generates a tremendous amount of hype in a completely unforced manner, allowing fans to have just as much to do with the marketingp rocess as the record label. The debut record from "Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows" perfectly exemplifies this, as anticipation has been growing since Craig Owens joined forces with producer John Feldmann after his unexpected departure from Chiodos. Giving hints to followers on a variety of social networking sites regarding the nature of the music and the personnel involved, the band was gradually introduced over a period of time. Boasting the impressive additions of Matt Good (From First To Last), Nick Martin (Underminded), Adam Russell (Story of the Year), and Aaron Stern (Matchbook Romance), it became immediately apparent that D.R.U.G.S. would be welcomed to the scene with open arms. Fortunately, some of the best songs these seasoned musicians have ever written appear on the band's long awaited debut album. With metallic guitar work, aggressive drumming, and vocal hooks that will be stuck in your head for days, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows have created the first great rock record of 2011.

Whether you love or hate Craig Owens, there is no denying that D.R.U.G.S.showcases his most passionate performance yet. Opener "If You Think This Song Is About You, It Probably Is" gets right to the point as Owens begins to exorcise his demons with lyrics like: "Be honest / Did you ever mention my name? / Did you get sick of the shame? / Did you lie on your back like a whore?" This track manages to be instantly accessible while offering enough variation in tempo and structure to stay interesting after several listens. "The Only Thing You Talk About" will sound familiar to those who heard the leak of the "Thermacare" demo this past June. Although originally intended for Chiodos, the vocal melodies and lyrics were salvaged for Owens' new project. Benefiting from reconstructed riffs and beefed up production, "The Only Thing You Talk About" is a prime example of Owens looking into the future rather than lamenting past occurrences. This is undoubtedly an anthem of change, on a personal and professional level.
