The Hot Rats - Turn Ons (2010)

The Hot Rats, AKA Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey, have announced their debut album release, 'Turn Ons', in stores January 19th via Fat Possum Records in the US.

Having played triumphant sets on the festival circuit across the summer, the band are touring the US and it's seems only right that Gaz and Danny now have the stage to themselves to showcase their latest musical incarnation. Having been holed up in a studio with ├╝ber producer Nigel Godrich for two weeks with little more than wine and cigarettes to keep them going, 'Turn Ons' is a collection of cover versions of their favourite rock songs from the last 40 years. With the instantly recognisable vocal talents of Coombes and the familiar pounding beats of Goffey, 'Turn Ons' is a veritable rock rampage via the likes of The Sex Pistols, The Kinks and Gang Of Four.
By definition, cover bands are typically looked down upon -- every town has one that knows the Jimmy Buffett catalog in and out -- but The Hot Rats are of a different caliber. Their whole schtick is essentially putting a Supergrassian twist -- or at times, sounding like the White Stripes -- on classic British artists, such as Pink Floyd's "Bike", the Kinks' "Big Sky" and the Beatles' "Drive My Car". But Gaz told the crowd that it wasn't really their intention to do anything with the songs they recorded for their debut, 'Turn Ons.'
"We made this record six months ago and we didn't expect it to turn into anything," he said. While some of the songs were instantly recognizable -- like their broody version of The Doors' "The Crystal Ship" and a relatively faster version of Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up" -- the Beastie Boys classic "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)" was something entirely different, leaving the crowd wondering if what they heard was indeed what they just heard.
