Amorphis - Skyforger (2009)

Those ex doom/death bands are always able to give their form of melancholic pop/rock a degree of originality, though pretty often you can never quite put your finger on it, and “Skyforger” goes on that same path. The sing-along song vocals soar like an anthem while supported by the hold-em-down saw-blade guitar chords with some keyboard support, my favorite being the old-school 60’s and 70’s organ sounds. Yet, there’s still a hint of the band old roots with a little bit of riff action and some powerful grows that go right along with some lighter Opeth like passages. Towards the end of the album, it morphs into a folk/rock/metal album, and gets heavier cranking up the riffs and harsh vocals. Some bands change and end up disowning their past, but Amorphis continues to change, yet still embraces some of their past at the same time.
