Marilyn Manson - The High End of Low (2009)

The album received mixed critical reception. Although some critics praised the album as a return to Manson's original persona, others noted that it sounded diluted and repetitive.

Reviewing for Thrash Hits, Hugh Platt opens his analysis by questioning if Manson has been able to produce "his nastiest record since Antichrist Superstar." He notes that although Twiggy's involvement in the record "gives the album some much-needed muscle," it "never quite manifests a full personality of its own, favouring imitation of Manson albums past, as opposed to forging a new identity of its own." Platt concludes his review by citing that "True, at times it seems Manson is still treading water in a pool of self-pity, but at its best The High End of Low is a goose-stepping, arse-slapping hunk of slutty death-disco." Platt evaluated the album with a rating of 4 out of 6, leaning his mixed reaction towards a fairly positive one.

Although he did not supply any specific rating, The Quietus' John Robb offered a gleaming track-by-track review of The High End of Low, comparing the album's highlights to The Doors, David Bowie, Bauhaus and Iggy Pop, and citing "We're from America" as one of the album's top tracks.

Rolling Stone gave the album 2.5 out of 5 stars (WTF?? I will never, never trust this magazine again...) The main reason for this review is because "In 1996, refrains like "You're as pretty as a swastika" and "It's Arma-goddamn-motherfuckin'-geddon" might have raised a few hackles, but in 2009 those lyrics hold little shock value." However, he did say the best moments from the album came from the blues-tinged ballads, such as "Four Rusted Horses".

Phil Freeman of Allmusic gave the album 3 stars out of 5, citing the lack of variety, and that "two or three musical ideas are repeated throughout the disc". He also criticized the lyrics, stating that Manson "[feels] like he's trying to convince himself as much as the audience" and that he is "pretty much advertising that [he's] out of ideas".

My opinion - great album! Fuck the critics, they don't know anything. Thank you MM for acoustic tracks, they are wonderful. Give it a listen, the album worth it.

P.S. this is cdrip in 192 kbps, so quality is pretty good. When v0 will be available I will definitely update this post, so be patient.
